Hello! We have been so busy and it is time to get back to our weekly updates! This year has started out with a bang, EVERYONE is on their “A” game and taking it to the next level! This year we had an open and honest conversation about where we are and where we need to be- we all committed to pushing ourselves even more than we have in the past, that includes Mrs. B as well 🙂

This year we are becoming architects of our own education and since many of us are almost in high school we are taking ownership of our education. Here is a group shot of almost all of us !

We have been working hard redecorating and setting up our new room and it is looking excellent!!!! We have a really sweet library and “chill area”. Reading should be a pleasurable experience and we are encouraged to visit this area daily!

In Social Studies 7th grade is completing their unit on Geography – here is a shot of us creating a map of the U.S. complete with State Names, Capitals, and State Flags.

In 8th grade Social Studies we are working on the Industrial Revolution and did a project on Child labor using our adopted College’s home state- North Carolina. We used primary documents and listened to oral histories to get a feel of what it was like to live in this era. We are now discovering the Cotton Gin and mapping the slave trade – here is a shot of Matt mapping the journey of thousands of African’s and his final product!

In Reading we have been loving our 7th and 8th grade Novel Units!!!! In 7th Grade we are reading “Face on the Milk-carton” by Caroline B Cooney. This is book number one in a series of 3. This book is a mystery about a girl who thinks she discovers she was kidnapped 12 years ago and her loving family may not be her family at all! We are using this book as the base for making connections as well as to learn and practice the skills “finding evidence in text” and “Think Pair Share”.

In eight grade we are reading “Freedom Writers Diary” by Erin Gruwell. This is a true life account of a teacher and her at-risk students in Los Angeles California in the 1990’s. This book chronicles the lives of teens as they progress through and graduate high school. We have started Freedom Journals and are giving voice to our lives as well! Here are some shots of us with out new favorite novel!!
